FAIMER is now inviting applications for the 2018 Student Projects for Health competition! The Student Projects for Health competition is supported by GEMx—a global partnership for educational exchange in medicine and the health professions—and FAIMER, and will be a feature of the 2018 conference of The Network: Towards Unity for Health (TUFH). Co-hosted by the University of Limerick, the conference will be held August 16-20, 2018, in Limerick, Ireland. Sponsorship includes air travel, hotel accommodation, and conference registration fee. The theme of the conference is Community Empowerment for Health: A Multi-Sector Approach. Winners will be invited to attend the conference and present posters about their projects. The award includes air travel, hotel accommodation, and conference registration fee.

Now in its fourth year, the Student Projects for Health competition recognizes students who have made outstanding contributions to projects that successfully promote community health and well-being. It is open to all undergraduate and graduate students currently enrolled in any course of study who have been participating in such projects. Approximately 15 winners will be selected and more than one student from the same project may be selected, so all key contributors are encouraged to apply. Each application will require an endorsement by a faculty member closely associated with the project.

Applications will be considered by a distinguished group of international reviewers with a wide variety of expertise in health professions education. Detailed information on selection criteria can be found here.

National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME) Latin America Grants Program

The National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME) has announced the continuation of its Latin America Grants Program. The NBME is currently seeking proposals to develop regional medical school consortia that will have a broad, sustainable impact on the quality of medical student assessment and program evaluation in Latin America. Each award will provide up to $50,000 over a two-year period. Proposals are due by January 15, 2018.

2018 Travelling Fellowships for Medical Education and The Clinical Teacher

The Association for the Study of Medical Education (ASME) and Wiley have announced funding of up to £2,000 each for Medical Education and The Clinical Teacher to support a 2018 Travelling Fellowship.

The aim of the Medical Education Fellowship is to provide financial support to an individual or a research group to facilitate gaining further experience/training/knowledge that will enable strengthening of health professional education research efforts. The individual or team must demonstrate commitment to a particular project and clearly indicate how the activities supported by the Travelling Fellowship will enhance the capacity to engage in conceptually grounded, methodologically rigorous, and programmatic research efforts. Among other things, the Fellowship may be used to enable visiting an institution or research group in furtherance of the individual’s own professional development and collaborative opportunities or to bring a scholar to the team in furtherance of the group’s and research project’s development.

The aim of The Clinical Teacher Fellowship is to provide financial support to an individual to gain further experience and understanding of the field of clinical teaching and learning by visiting an educational or health institution for their own professional and personal development, sharing insights with the host institution, and undertaking some form of project, which may be either a research study or educational development and evaluation.

To apply for either Fellowship, applicants are asked to submit a proposal outlining the purpose for which they would use the Fellowship. The submission should be written in English and must not exceed 1,000 words in length. One entry per applicant is permitted.

The proposal should be accompanied by:

  • A completed application form and covering letter
  • A brief curriculum vitae (maximum of two pages)
  • A letter of support from the applicant’s supervisor
  • Confirmation of acceptance by the institution/center(s) to be visited, should the application be successful

2017 Association for Medical Education in Europe (AMEE) Conference

The 2017 Association for Medical Education in Europe (AMEE) Conference was held August 26-30 in Helsinki, Finland. The AMEE conference is recognized globally as a key annual medical and health care professions education platform, regularly attended by 3,500 participants from all over the world. Session formats included workshops, short communications, posters, specialty courses, symposia, and plenaries.

A number of FAIMER staff participated in AMEE 2017, serving as symposium, workshop, and short communication presenters. FAIMER President John Norcini and Research Scientist Marta van Zanten facilitated a pre-conference workshop with WFME President David Gordon, titled The World Federation for Medical Education (WFME) Recognition Program for Accrediting Agencies: Purpose, Processes, and Criteria. Dr. Norcini also gave a presentation titled What are the Implications of Entrustable Professional Activities for Assessment? as part of the symposium Entrustment Decisions: Implications for Curriculum Development and Assessment. Dr. van Zanten and FAIMER Vice President for Research and Data Resources Jack Boulet presented a short communication titled United States-citizen Graduates of International Medical Schools: 1991-2015. Dr. Boulet also served as chairperson of a short communication titled Management and Leadership: Social Accountability, and co-facilitated a workshop titled Scoring Performance-Based Assessments. FAIMER Information Scientist Amy Opalek presented a short communication on behalf of Research Associate Sarah Leng, titled Professional Regulation of Physicians. FAIMER Senior Scholar Robbert Duvivier was the recipient of the 2017 Miriam Friedman Ben-David New Educator’s Award, presented during the opening plenary session.

FAIMER Research Scientist Marta van Zanten Publishes Article on Recognition of Accrediting Agencies

An article about the evaluation and recognition of agencies that accredit medical education programs authored by FAIMER Research Scientist Marta van Zanten was recently published online by the journal Quality in Higher Education. Accreditation provides a level of legitimacy to medical education programs; however, the agencies responsible for accreditation may vary in their scope, governance, and the robustness and transparency of their decision-making processes. To enhance validity and comply with governmental and/or medical professional regulations, some agencies undergo external evaluations of their standards and protocols, a process commonly referred to as recognition. Dr. van Zanten’s article compares six European and United States-based recognition organizations that evaluate agencies that accredit medical education, highlighting similarities and differences in scope, processes, and consequences of review.

The article, titled “Recognition organisations that evaluate agencies accrediting medical education programmes: Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?” was published on August 30, 2017. The first 50 people to access the article will receive a free download of the entire manuscript.

New FAIMER Regional Institute to Launch in April 2018 in Santiago, Chile

FAIMER is pleased to announce the launch of a new Regional Institute for Spanish-speaking health professionals from Latin America. The FAIMER Regional Institute in Latin America (FRILA) will welcome its first group of Fellows in April 2018. The program will be conducted in Spanish, and will be based at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile in Santiago, Chile, under the direction of Lili Moraga. Applications for the FRILA fellowship program are now open.

July FAIMER Colloquium Presented by 2012 FAIMER Institute Fellow Maboh Nkwati of Cameroon

2012 FAIMER Institute Fellow Maboh Nkwati of CameroonA FAIMER colloquium was held in Philadelphia for staff, invited guests, and online participants on July 25, 2017 that described exciting recent developments at the Biaka University Institute of Buea (BUIB) in Cameroon. The presentation was given by 2012 FAIMER Institute Fellow Maboh Nkwati, who currently serves as Vice Provost for Academic Affairs and Head of the Department of Nursing at BUIB. Dr. Nkwati spoke about the impact that FAIMER and the fellowship experience has had on him, his colleagues, and his school. He was accompanied by Mrs. Francisca Biaka, Chair and Provost of BUIB, who enthusiastically endorsed the presentation.

Since 2011, three faculty members from BUIB have participated in the FAIMER Institute fellowship program—though, at the time of their fellowships, the school was called St. Francis School of Health Sciences. The addition of business and education schools enabled BUIB to achieve University Institute status in 2016. 2011 FAIMER Institute Fellow Amingkeng Leke serves as BUIB’s Vice Provost for Research/Cooperation/Quality and 2014 Fellow Nyenti Bessem is Program Coordinator for Geriatric Nursing.

Dr. Nkwati reflected back on the education innovation projects that he and his colleagues developed and implemented as part of their FAIMER fellowship experience, which focused on social accountability and capacity building. He believes that these projects, and the ongoing guidance and mentorship provided by their project advisors, have played an important role in their professional development and the elevation of their school to a University Institute.

Over the past several years, Dr. Nkwati and his colleagues have worked on strengthening local partnerships in Cameroon as well as building international partnerships. Their relationship with Dr. Leke’s FAIMER project advisor Cheryl Portwood, Assistant Clinical Professor at the Drexel University College of Nursing and Health Professions, in particular, has enabled them to partner with Drexel University in a very unique way. The implementation of a global/virtual classroom, which allows BUIB and Drexel students to engage with each other through a range of interactive technologies, has been a highlight of this partnership. BUIB has also recently moved to an objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) model, with students practicing on standardized patients rather than patients.

As BUIB moves into the next phase of its partnership with Drexel, they are exploring options for business school and public health school exchanges. Dr. Nkwati believes that BUIB has a unique opportunity to create synergy between health care, business, and education. Likewise, BUIB hopes to continue to strengthen and build on their relationship with FAIMER, which they believe has played a significant role in the remarkable success they’ve experienced to date.

There Is Still Time to Apply for Fall Enrollment in the FAIMER-Keele Distance Learning Program

FAIMER is currently accepting 2017 applications for the FAIMER-Keele Distance Learning program. The deadline for application is August 31, 2017, and course work will begin on September 25, 2017. (The 2018 application will open in early 2018.)

Now in its fifth year, the program is conducted in partnership with Keele University and The Centre for Medical Education in Context (CenMEDIC) in the United Kingdom. Courses are administered by CenMEDIC and follow the quality assurance guidelines and policies of Keele.

What makes the FAIMER-Keele program unique is its focus on accreditation and assessment. Participants are able to earn a Certificate, Diploma, or Master’s Degree in Health Professions Education (MHPE): Accreditation and Assessment. The program aims to empower health professions educators with the knowledge and skills to take educational standards and practice to a higher level—to develop their own practice, to improve health professions education at their institutions and in their communities, and ultimately to help bring about real and lasting advances in local health care.

Program features include:

  • Training and mentoring from international experts in health professions education
  • A flexible learning format, which allows busy working professionals to learn new skills and advance their careers while continuing to practice in their current positions
  • Planning developments in assessment, quality, and curriculum that are contextually relevant
  • A focus on accreditation and assessment, in which international standards, accreditation processes, quality assurance, and monitoring are integrated into study
