Application for the 2019 FAIMER Institute Is Now Open

Posted on Categories applications, FAIMER Institute, fellowships

FAIMER is now accepting applications for the 2019 FAIMER Institute. The FAIMER Institute is a competitive 30-month fellowship program for international health professions educators who have demonstrated the potential to play a key role in improving health professions education at their institutions and in their countries. The program is unique among leadership programs and other degree programs in health professions education—it is a transformational global educational experience for health professions faculty. It is designed to teach education methods, leadership and management, education scholarship and research, and project management and evaluation, as well as to develop strong professional bonds with other educators as each Fellow becomes a member of a global network of health professions educators. An interactive, high-engagement approach uses participants’ projects as the ‘laboratory’ to apply their learning.

The FAIMER Institute offers an intense, interactive educational experience spread out over two residential sessions in Philadelphia and three distance learning sessions. Year one (March 2019 – February 2020) is comprised of a three-week onsite session in Philadelphia, followed by an 11-month distance learning session. Year two (March 2020 – August 2021) is comprised of a two-week onsite session in Philadelphia, a five-month distance learning session, and a 12-month distance learning session during which participants earn a Certificate in Health Professions Education: Accreditation and Assessment through the FAIMER-Keele Distance Learning program.

Participants’ education innovation projects are the focal point for application of learning at the FAIMER Institute. For 2019, FAIMER encourages applicants to propose education innovation projects that support maternal and child health. Maternal and child health projects will provide an opportunity for Fellows to connect education innovation and health outcomes, by encouraging them to identify key health problems and create health workforce education innovations to address them. Projects in other domains such as education methods, leadership, community health (in areas other than maternal and child health), and program evaluation will also be considered.

Thanks to generous support from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) and other benefactors, FAIMER is able to sponsor most participants to attend the Institute. A wide range of financial support is available, including significant scholarships, based on need.

The deadline for application is August 2, 2018. Applications will be reviewed as they are received and applicants will be informed as selected.

The application deadline for the 2018 FAIMER Institute has been extended to July 28, 2017.

The FAIMER Institute is a part-time fellowship program for international health professions faculty who have the potential to play key roles in improving health professions education at their schools and in their regions. The Institute is designed to be a transformational international educational experience. Fellows receive training, tools, and professional support to become agents of change—creators of meaningful and sustainable advances in health professions education aimed at improving the health of their communities. The FAIMER Institute:

  • provides training in health professions education methods and research
  • develops leadership and management skills
  • emphasizes the practical application of knowledge through an individual education innovation project that ensures relevance to the Fellow’s institution or region
  • fosters professional support and collaboration with other educators as each Fellow becomes a member of a global health professions education community of practice

Established in 2001, the FAIMER Institute is based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in the United States and is open to health professions educators from all countries. The program consists of two brief residential sessions in Philadelphia, each followed by a one-year distance learning session. During the distance learning sessions, Fellows participate in a series of web-based discussions with other Fellows and Institute faculty and implement an education innovation project at their home institution. Throughout the program, Fellows receive individual coaching and mentoring from international experts on health professions education.

The FAIMER Institute Is Moving to March

Posted on Categories FAIMER Institute

The residential session of the FAIMER Institute, which takes place in Philadelphia each year, will be moving from October to March—effective with the next incoming class of Fellows, who will attend the residential session in March 2017. The decision to move the Institute was made based on careful consideration of feedback from Fellows and a need to better align the schedule with the FAIMER-Keele Certificate in Health Professions Education: Accreditation and Assessment program, which is now a part of the Institute curriculum. Holding the residential session in March will allow FAIMER to better coordinate Fellows’ involvement in the FAIMER-Keele program with the other components of the Institute.

The FAIMER Institute has experienced considerable growth over the past 15 years and, as it has evolved, certain modifications have been necessary to ensure that the Institute remains as positive and valuable an experience as possible for our Fellows. The move to March is consistent with the goal of continuous quality improvement of our teaching and learning.
