International Medical Education Directory (IMED) To Be Discontinued by Mid-2015

Posted on Categories World Directory of Medical SchoolsTags

As previously announced, it is expected that FAIMER’s International Medical Education Directory (IMED) and IMED Subscription Service will be discontinued by mid-2015. The World Federation for Medical Education(WFME) also expects to discontinue its Avicenna Directory by mid-2015. At that time, the World Directory of Medical Schools will become the definitive list of medical schools in the world.

The World Directory of Medical Schools was launched in April 2014 by FAIMER and WFME. Developed in collaboration with the World Health Organization and the University of Copenhagen, the World Directory is a result of a March 2012 agreement to merge IMED and WFME’s Avicenna Directory to produce a single comprehensive resource on undergraduate medical education worldwide.

During the transition to the new World Directory of Medical Schools, IMED and the Avicenna Directory remain available to ensure that medical regulatory authorities and other users of these directories have continuity of the essential service that they provide. Please monitor the FAIMER website for updates on this transition.

FAIMER and the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME) are pleased to announce an important milestone in their collaboration to develop the World Directory of Medical Schools. The World Directory is now available at www.wdoms.org. This new resource, developed in collaboration with the World Health Organization and the University of Copenhagen, is the result of a March 2012 agreement to merge the organizations’ respective directories—FAIMER’s International Medical Education Directory (IMED) and WFME’s Avicenna Directory—to produce a single comprehensive resource on undergraduate medical education worldwide.

The merger of IMED and the Avicenna Directory has combined FAIMER and WFME’s existing data sets and streamlined their data collection efforts. The new World Directory offers enhanced information such as enrollment and curriculum data for schools that offer multiple medical programs or tracks. In the future, additional features, such as information about program recognition or accreditation, will be added to meet the needs of medical regulatory authorities, certifying bodies, and researchers. The availability of current, high-quality information on undergraduate medical education in the form of a centralized resource will advance research on the quality of medical education and efforts to improve medical education, with the ultimate goal of improving public health.

During the transition to the new World Directory of Medical Schools, IMED and the Avicenna Directory will remain open for a year, to ensure that medical regulatory authorities and other users of these directories have continuity of the essential service that they provide. The World Directory, however, will take over as the definitive list of medical schools in the world, and IMED and Avicenna will be discontinued in 2015.

Teams from FAIMER and the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME) met in Copenhagen in June 2013, together with sponsors and potential sponsors, to plan towards the launch of the World Directory of Medical Schools.

The target date for the World Directory to open is the start of 2014. The existing directories, Avicenna and IMED, will remain open for a year following the launch of the World Directory, to ensure that users of these directories have continuity of the essential service that they provide. The World Directory, however, will take over as the definitive list of medical schools in the world, and Avicenna and IMED will close once the World Directoryis fully operational.

Emmanuel G. Cassimatis, Chair of the FAIMER Board, and Stefan Lindgren, President of WFME, agreed:

“We are very pleased with progress towards the opening of the new World Directory of Medical Schools. Teams from WFME and FAIMER are working together very effectively, and it is particularly pleasing that partners from all over the world are supporting this important venture.”

Sponsors from Australia, Canada, the Republic of Korea, the United Kingdom, and the United States are already committed to support the World Directory, and sponsors from Denmark, Saudi Arabia, and other countries are expected to join in the near future.

Data Exchange to Provide FAIMER with Information on International Medical Schools

Posted on Categories data resources, health professions educationTags , , , , ,

FAIMER has begun to receive information from international medical schools that will allow it to enhance its web-based resources on international medical education. Included is information about each school’s student body, application requirements, medical curriculum, and teaching methods. This information will provide a more detailed picture of international medical schools and their graduates, allowing FAIMER to expand data resources, such as the International Medical Education Directory (IMED), and to further its research on international medical education programs.

International medical schools are providing this information as part of an agreement with the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG®). According to the agreement, schools that provide such information will be able to obtain from ECFMG aggregate data on the performance of their students/graduates on Step 1, Step 2 Clinical Knowledge (CK), and Step 2 Clinical Skills (CS) of the United States Medical Licensing Examination® (USMLE®). International medical schools have expressed interest in obtaining USMLE performance data on their students/graduates, and it is expected that this exchange of information will benefit the medical schools, ECFMG, and FAIMER. FAIMER research staff are partnering with ECFMG to collect the medical school information via a Medical School Profile survey.

Eligible schools will be able to obtain aggregate USMLE performance data beginning in May 2010. Schools wishing to receive these data must meet certain criteria, including the completion of a Performance Information Agreement and the Medical School Profile survey.

In addition to its plans to provide aggregate data, ECFMG began to provide eligible international medical schools with performance data on individual examinees in late 2009. For more information on the provision of individual performance data, refer to “ECFMG to Provide International Medical Schools with USMLE Performance Data on Their Students/Graduates” on the News page of the ECFMG website.

Officials of international medical schools can obtain a Performance Information Agreement by contacting the ECFMG Medical School Web Portal (EMSWP) Administrator at emswpadmin@ecfmg.org.

University of Copenhagen and FAIMER Sign Data Sharing Agreement

At the direction of the World Health Organization (WHO) and in partnership with the World Federation for Medical Education, FAIMER, and other international organizations, the University of Copenhagen is building an electronic directory that will be a successor to WHO’s World Directory of Medical Schools. This new resource has been named the Avicenna Directories, after the 11th century physician-philosopher ibn Sina. The goal of the Avicenna Directories is to provide “an up-to-date, accessible, electronic world list of education institutions for health professions” including details about their educational programs, resources, quality assurance, and contact information. FAIMER is a member of the International Advisory Committee for the Avicenna Directories. To support this endeavor, FAIMER and the University of Copenhagen have agreed to share health professions education data between their respective directories. As a result, this agreement enriches both the International Medical Education Directory (IMED) and the Avicenna Directories.
