Trainee selection process

General Medicine: After earning the university degree, physicians who choose to accept it are granted a post in General Medicine.

Specialist Medicine: Admission to specialty training is based on the national Médico Interno Residente (MIR) exam. The number of available posts is fixed every year by law depending on the need for specialists and the capacity of the hospitals. This exam is open to foreign physicians, provided there is a mutual understanding of cultural cooperation between Spain and the physician's country.

Specialty curriculum authority

The specialty curriculum authorities are the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Education and Culture with input from the Regional Authorities. Curriculum content is determined by the National Commissions of Specialties.

There is close collaboration between university departments and public hospitals for postgraduate training.
