{"id":580,"date":"2010-03-05T15:36:33","date_gmt":"2010-03-05T15:36:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.faimer.org\/news\/?p=580"},"modified":"2016-11-21T18:07:02","modified_gmt":"2016-11-21T18:07:02","slug":"academic-medicine-celebrates-flexner-report-centenary","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.faimer.org\/news\/2010\/03\/academic-medicine-celebrates-flexner-report-centenary\/","title":{"rendered":"<em>Academic Medicine<\/em> Celebrates Flexner Report Centenary"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The year 2010 marks the 100<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary of the publication of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.carnegiefoundation.org\/publications\/medical-education-united-states-and-canada-bulletin-number-four-flexner-report-0\" target=\"_blank\">Flexner Report (Medical Education in the United States and Canada: A Report to the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching)<\/a>, Abraham Flexner\u2019s seminal critical assessment of standards and practices in medical education. Flexner\u2019s report led to widespread reform and laid much of the groundwork for health professions education today. To both celebrate the centenary of the Flexner Report and examine its influence on contemporary theory and practice, <i>Academic Medicine<\/i> has devoted its <a href=\"http:\/\/journals.lww.com\/academicmedicine\/toc\/2010\/02000\" target=\"_blank\">February 2010 issue<\/a> to the report\u2019s legacy\u2014the successes it has engendered, its relevance today, and the challenges yet to be overcome. In a broader sense, the issue seeks to look back at health professions education\u2019s past in an effort to see its future. As Dr. Richard B. Gunderman explains in his Foreword to the issue, an \u201coverarching theme in this collection is the creative tension between continuity and change. To be faithful to the spirit of Flexner\u2019s work, we must not only re-examine the questions he presented but also pose new ones that he could not have foreseen.
