Those who register by October 4 are guaranteed to receive advance materials; however, registration is expected to remain open through October 19.<\/p>\n<p><em>Water and Health: Reducing Inequalities and Defining the Future<\/em> is the title of this year\u2019s IME Day, which will take place on October 21, 2015 in Philadelphia from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm (UTC \u2013 4). The keynote speaker will be Dr. Shannon M\u00e1rquez of the Drexel University School of Public Health. <a href=\"https:\/\/ecfmgevents.webex.com\/mw0401lsp13\/mywebex\/default.do?nomenu=true&amp;siteurl=ecfmgevents&amp;service=6&amp;rnd=0.04656659757004067&amp;main_url=https%3A%2F%2Fecfmgevents.webex.com%2Fec0701lsp13%2Feventcenter%2Fevent%2FeventAction.do%3FtheAction%3Ddetail%26confViewID%3D1752976541%26%26EMK%3D4832534b000000025dea5b99ac3b16621e0bde9683096bd781b6b6c7d987914c7c43d00b2badc9bf%26email%3Dsyuan%40faimer.org%26encryptTicket%3DSDJTSwAAAAJgbKsGp5dI9KN3tNbJD6xVFEHQfYerA2c98JuLFLDu8w2%26%26siteurl%3Decfmgevents\" target=\"_blank\">Registration<\/a> is now open for virtual participation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Overview<\/strong><br \/>\nIn this highly interactive face-to-face and virtual workshop, Dr. M\u00e1rquez will highlight and provoke discussion on interdisciplinary and interprofessional issues related to water and health. Here are some of the facts:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>2.5 billion people lack access to improved sanitation.<\/li>\n<li>1 billion people practice open defecation, nine out of ten in rural areas.<\/li>\n<li>748 million people lack access to improved drinking-water and it is estimated that 1.8 billion people use a source of drinking-water that is fecally contaminated.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Shannon M\u00e1rquez<\/strong><br \/>\nDr. M\u00e1rquez is the Associate Vice Provost for Global Health and International Development at Drexel University. She serves as the Director of Drexel\u2019s Global Health Program and Principal Investigator of the National Institutes of Health funded Opening Doors for Health Disparities Research Training Program at the Drexel University School of Public Health.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. M\u00e1rquez\u2019s research and scholarly work focuses on water, sanitation, and hygiene promotion (WASH); the environmental burden of disease in developing countries; and capacity-building and health systems strengthening. As Associate Vice Provost, she also oversees the Dornsife Global Development Scholars Program, which leverages an exciting capacity-building partnership between Drexel and World Vision to provide international field training in WASH, global health, and international development and funding. The program offers faculty\/student research, six-month student co-op experiences, and summer experiences in 19 countries in Sub-Saharan Africa.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. M\u00e1rquez holds a Ph.D. in environmental sciences and engineering from The UNC-Chapel Hill Gillings School of Global Public Health, a Master of Engineering in Civil Engineering from Texas A&amp;M University, and a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Prairie View A&amp;M University. At Drexel, she teaches courses in WASH, global health ethics, health aspects of WASH, and public health in developing countries to online students located around the world. She also oversees a number of global health research and training activities in Europe, Asia, Latin America, and Africa on behalf of Drexel.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Registration<\/strong><br \/>\nWe invite you to join us as a virtual participant in IME Day 2015! Virtual participants\u2014either individuals or small groups\u2014will have access to the live streamed session, and moderators will incorporate virtual participants\u2019 input into plenary discussions.
