The Association for the Study of Medical Education (ASME) and Wiley have announced funding of up to £2,000 each for Medical Education and The Clinical Teacher to support a 2018 Travelling Fellowship.

The aim of the Medical Education Fellowship is to provide financial support to an individual or a research group to facilitate gaining further experience/training/knowledge that will enable strengthening of health professional education research efforts. The individual or team must demonstrate commitment to a particular project and clearly indicate how the activities supported by the Travelling Fellowship will enhance the capacity to engage in conceptually grounded, methodologically rigorous, and programmatic research efforts. Among other things, the Fellowship may be used to enable visiting an institution or research group in furtherance of the individual’s own professional development and collaborative opportunities or to bring a scholar to the team in furtherance of the group’s and research project’s development.

The aim of The Clinical Teacher Fellowship is to provide financial support to an individual to gain further experience and understanding of the field of clinical teaching and learning by visiting an educational or health institution for their own professional and personal development, sharing insights with the host institution, and undertaking some form of project, which may be either a research study or educational development and evaluation.

To apply for either Fellowship, applicants are asked to submit a proposal outlining the purpose for which they would use the Fellowship. The submission should be written in English and must not exceed 1,000 words in length. One entry per applicant is permitted.

The proposal should be accompanied by:

  • A completed application form and covering letter
  • A brief curriculum vitae (maximum of two pages)
  • A letter of support from the applicant’s supervisor
  • Confirmation of acceptance by the institution/center(s) to be visited, should the application be successful

Medical Education Editorial Internships

Medical Education is an international, peer-reviewed journal with distribution to readers in more than 80 countries. The journal aims to publish material of the highest quality reflecting worldwide or provocative issues and perspectives relevant to health professional education. The contents will be of interest to learners, teachers, and researchers. It aims to have a significant impact on scholarship in health professional education and, ultimately, on the quality of health care by prioritizing papers that offer a fundamental advance in understanding of practically relevant educational issues. The journal welcomes papers on any aspect of health professional education.

As part of its emphasis on capacity building for the field, the journal will offer three editorial internship positions, beginning July 1, 2017. Interns will be involved in all aspects of the editorial role, working closely with the Editor-in-Chief and deputy editors, reviewing and offering recommendations on submitted works, engaging in conversations about electronic and print-based innovations at the journal, and contributing editorials or commentaries on timely issues. Interns will be selected through a competitive process (outlined below) with some effort made to ensure geographic diversity.

Applicants should anticipate being able to work 1-2 hours per week for the 12-month duration of the internship. Applicants are also expected to participate in hour-long monthly meetings, which will be held electronically via the internet and, dependent on the location of the interns, may well be outside of normal office hours. They should have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, formal research training, and a strong understanding of the field of health professional education and health professional education research. An allowance of £300 will be made available for any expenses incurred. In addition, registration to the Association for the Study of Medical Education (ASME) Scientific Meeting will be paid in the July following the completion of the internship.

The aim of the Fellowships is to provide financial support for the successful applicant to Medical Education to build capacity for scholarship in the field of medical education and medical education research; and for the successful applicant to The Clinical Teacher to gain further experience, skills, and understanding in the field of clinical teaching. The Fellowships will enable cross-institutional visitation in furtherance of the applicant’s professional and personal development and collaborative opportunities.

FAIMER Faculty Members Tejinder Singh and Anshu Publish Book on Assessment in Medical Education

FAIMER faculty members Tejinder Singh (Director, CMCL-FAIMER Regional Institute; PHIL 2003; IFME 2006) and Anshu (CMCL 2007, PHIL 2009, IFME 2012) served as co-editors of the book Principles of Assessment in Medical Education, published by Jaypee Brothers in March 2012. The book, a sequel to an earlier book entitled Principles of Medical Education, provides a scientific approach to the assessment of clinical competence, with particular emphasis on the use of assessment to promote learning in Indian medical schools. The book contains a foreword written by Bill Burdick (FAIMER Associate Vice President for Education and Co-Director of the FAIMER Institute), as well as chapters authored by FAIMER President and CEO John Norcini, and FAIMER faculty members B.V. Travelling Fellowships Available through Medical Education and The Clinical Teacher

Travelling fellowships for health professions educators are currently available through the journals Medical Education and The Clinical Teacher. The Association for the Study of Medical Education (ASME) and Wiley-Blackwell, who publishes the journals on behalf of ASME, have identified up to £2,000 GBP in funding through each journal. Proposals for each fellowship should address a relevant, high-priority area of study within each field; propose a practical plan with achievable goals; and encourage collaboration and the exchange of knowledge among educators. Additional requirements specific to each fellowship should also be reviewed before applying. The application deadline is March 1, 2012.
