Forty FAIMER Fellows and nine FAIMER faculty participated in the Brazilian Medical Education Congress, held October 18-21 in Salvador, Brazil. Eliana Amaral (PHIL 2003), Co-Director of the Brazil-FAIMER Regional Institute, reports that FAIMER Fellows presented 66 posters and 34 oral communications, representing nearly 9% and 15% of the totals respectively, despite the fact that the FAIMER group represented less than 2% of the total participants in the Congress. FAIMER Fellows also served as reviewers for poster sessions and some Fellows were elected to serve as coordinators of four (out of eight) regional offices for the Brazilian Association on Medical Education.

In conjunction with the Congress, a Brazil-FAIMER Regional Institute meeting was held. Eliana notes that the meeting was successful not only in “bringing the group together,” but also in “stimulating potential candidates for the Regional as well as the Philadelphia Institute.” Participants in the meeting included the Brazilian Manager of the Pan American Health Organization and a representative from the Brazilian Ministry of Health, partners for the Brazil-FAIMER Regional Institute. Their participation helped raise awareness for faculty development issues and the role of FAIMER initiatives at a national level.

Twenty-five new Fellows were added to the ranks of the Brazil-FAIMER Regional Institute, as the second year of the program got underway. When last year’s Fellows returned to work with the new Fellows, the assembled group of 50 became the largest FAIMER Regional Institute overlap session to date. An educator from the medical school in Angola was funded by the Ministry of Health to observe the program. Feedback from participants, as well as local and international faculty, indicates that the three-week program was a tremendous success. During the overlap period, one day was devoted to a National Medical Education (NME) event, which strategically focused on collaboration between the Association of Brazilian Medical Schools (ABEM), the Ministry of Health, and the Brazil-FAIMER Regional Institute.

The following is a list of participating 2008 Fellows:

Cláudia Márcia Barreto, Universidade Federal Fluminense, Brazil

Vera Therezinha Medeiros Borges, Universidade Estadual Paulista, Brazil

Izabel Cristina Meister Coelho, Faculdade Evangélica do Paraná, Brazil

Paulo José Medeiros de Sousa Costa, Universidade Estadual de Ciências da Saúde de Alagoas, Brazil

Twenty-five medical educators from schools throughout Brazil participated in the inaugural session of the Brazil-FAIMER Regional Institute held from February 1-10, 2007 in Tabuba, Brazil. The program, conducted in Portuguese, aimed to improve education methodology skills, leadership and management skills, and promote development of a community of educators in Brazil. It included sessions on small group dynamics, conflict management, change management, project planning, program evaluation, as well as student assessment, problem based learning, and bedside teaching. As in other FAIMER Institutes, refinement of education innovation projects served as an important focal point of Fellows’ learning. The program is directed by Institute Alumni Henry Campos from Universidad Federale do Ceará and Eliana Amaral from Universidade Estadual de Campinas, and receives major support from the Brazilian Ministry of Health. One goal of the Institute – developing a community of educators – is already well on its way. The Brazil-FAIMER listserv, started only two weeks ago, already has over 160 e-mail postings!

William Burdick, M.D., M.S.Ed., FAIMER’s Director of Education, and FAIMER Institute Faculty Member, Stewart Mennin, Ph.D., traveled to Universidad Federal do Ceara in Fortaleza, Brazil, in May to meet with local medical educators about the upcoming Brazil-FAIMER Regional Institute. The planning session included a number of FAIMER Institute Fellows from South America, including Henry Campos, M.D., M.Sc., Ph.D., Dean, Faculdade de Medicina, Universidade Federal do Ceara, who will direct the new Institute. The Brazilian Secretary for Health Manpower, the Associate Director of the Brazilian Medical Education Association, and representatives from local medical schools were also in attendance.

The Brazil-FAIMER Regional Institute, expected to begin in February 2007, is FAIMER’s third such collaboration. Regional Institutes in Mumbai, India, and Ludhiana, India, began in 2005 and 2006, respectively. Based on the model of the FAIMER Institute, established in Philadelphia in the United States in 2001, Regional Institutes provide opportunities for international medical school faculty to learn education methods and leadership skills, and to develop professional relationships. Applications to participate in the Brazil-FAIMER Regional Institute will be accepted beginning in the fall of 2006.
