Inaugural FAIMER-Keele Master’s Class Completes Residential Session at Keele University

inaugural-newsThe inaugural class of the FAIMER-Keele Master’s in Health Professions Education Distance Learning program completed their residential session at Keele University from August 30 to September 4, 2015. The session was led by Course Directors Professor Janet Grant of The Centre for Medical Education in Context (CenMEDIC) and Dr. John Norcini of FAIMER, as well as unit authors Dr. Danette McKinley and Dr. Jack Boulet, both of FAIMER. Members of the Master’s class submitted and defended their dissertation proposals during the weeklong session. With their proposals approved, they will conduct the activities needed to complete their dissertations by March 2016.

The intensive residential session provided an opportunity for students to have face-to-face meetings with the faculty, administrators, and classmates they have been corresponding with since the program’s implementation in April 2013. Students met with the Keele University librarian, Stephen Parton, to refine their literature searches. Dr. Paul Roach, Lecturer in Biomedical/Cell Engineering, provided an overview on the use of plagiarism detection at Keele, and gave them tips for writing their summaries of related research, including proper referencing. Students were provided with guidelines for academic writing by Mrs. Robin Bell, Foundation Year Coordinator for the Language Learning Unit. They had the unique opportunity to discuss the accreditation of clinical trainers with Dr. Charlotte Hart, Course Co-Director, Keele Master’s in Medical Education and Dr. Alwyn Ralphs, Keele Deputy Director of Postgraduate Programmes. Professor Kay Mohanna, Previous Course Director, and Mrs. Debbie Paddison, Keele Postgraduate Manager, were available to provide students with dissertation submission guidelines and an overview of university regulations, as well as respond to any other inquiries. Unit author Dr. Rodney Gale of CenMEDIC was on hand to discuss leadership, management, and accreditation issues. Mrs. Heather Owen, Program Evaluator at CenMEDIC, visited to observe the residential session. The course dinner, held on the evening of September 3 in a stately home, was attended by Professor Andrew Hassell, Dean of the Keele University School of Medicine.

Participants in the FAIMER-Keele Distance Learning program are able to earn a Certificate, Diploma, or Master’s Degree in Health Professions Education: Accreditation and Assessment. The program aims to empower health professions educators with the knowledge and skills to take educational standards and practice to a higher level—to develop their own practice, to improve health professions education at their institutions and in their communities, and ultimately to help bring about real and lasting advances in local health care.

There is still time to apply for 2015 enrollment in the FAIMER-Keele program! The deadline for application has been extended to September 11, 2015, and course work will begin on September 21, 2015. (The 2016 application will open on January 1, 2016.)

Applications are currently being accepted for 2014 enrollment in the FAIMER-Keele Distance Learning program.

The FAIMER-Keele Distance Learning (DL) program offers health professions educators the opportunity to receive advanced training in all aspects of health professions education. Educators in medicine, nursing, dentistry, and other health professions can acquire the knowledge and skills to advance health professions education at their institutions to the highest international standards.

The DL program is conducted in partnership with Keele University and the Centre for Medical Education in Context (CenMEDIC) in the United Kingdom. Courses are administered by CenMEDIC and follow the strict quality assurance guidelines and policies of Keele. The following programs are offered:

Registration is now open for FAIMER’s newly expanded Distance Learning (DL) program. In partnership with Keele University in the United Kingdom, the new FAIMER DL program will grant academic credentials in accordance with international standards. Participants will be able to earn a Certificate, Diploma, or Master’s Degree in Health Professions Education: Accreditation and Assessment. Courses will begin on April 8, 2013, conducted in partnership with Keele University and the Centre for Medical Education in Context (CenMEDIC) in the United Kingdom. Courses will be administered by CenMEDIC and will follow the strict quality assurance guidelines and policies of Keele.

Distance Learning Program to Offer Certificate, Diploma, and Master’s Degree in Partnership with Keele University

FAIMER is very pleased to announce that it is partnering with Keele University in the United Kingdom to expand the Distance Learning program into one that offers academic credentials in accordance with international standards. Beginning in 2013, participants in FAIMER Distance Learning (FAIMER DL) will be able to earn a FAIMER-Keele Certificate, Diploma, or Master’s Degree in Health Professions Education: Accreditation and Assessment. The courses will be conducted as fully supported distance learning using downloaded modules, podcasts, library work, and moderated discussion forums. The Master’s Degree program will include a brief residential session and a dissertation.

FAIMER DL courses are developed and will be administered by the Centre for Medical Education in Context (CenMEDIC) in the United Kingdom, under the leadership of FAIMER faculty member Janet Grant, Ph.D., Director of CenMEDIC, Emerita Professor of Education in Medicine at The Open University in the United Kingdom, and Honorary Professor at the University College London Medical School. The FAIMER-Keele courses will follow the strict quality assurance guidelines and policies of Keele University, and students will have access to Keele’s student services, including Keele’s online library.

FAIMER Faculty Members Tejinder Singh and Anshu Publish Book on Assessment in Medical Education

FAIMER faculty members Tejinder Singh (Director, CMCL-FAIMER Regional Institute; PHIL 2003; IFME 2006) and Anshu (CMCL 2007, PHIL 2009, IFME 2012) served as co-editors of the book Principles of Assessment in Medical Education, published by Jaypee Brothers in March 2012. The book, a sequel to an earlier book entitled Principles of Medical Education, provides a scientific approach to the assessment of clinical competence, with particular emphasis on the use of assessment to promote learning in Indian medical schools. The book contains a foreword written by Bill Burdick (FAIMER Associate Vice President for Education and Co-Director of the FAIMER Institute), as well as chapters authored by FAIMER President and CEO John Norcini, and FAIMER faculty members B.V. Adkoli, Payal Bansal (PHIL 2007, IFME 2010), Janet Grant, Zahra Ladhani (PHIL 2007), Ciraj Ali Mohammed (CMCL 2008, PHIL 2010), Supten Sarbadhikari (PSG 2007), Avinash Supe (Director, GSMC-FAIMER Regional Institute; PHIL 2002; IFME 2007), Ara Tekian, and Rashmi Vyas (PHIL 2003, IFME 2005).

Workshops in Assessment Held at Jordan University of Science and Technology (JUST)

In May 2007, a two-day workshop was held at Jordan University of Science and Technology (JUST) that focused on assessment in the medical school. The agenda for the workshops was developed in collaboration with the Dean of the medical school and the topics addressed included 1) the mini-Clinical Evaluation Exercise (mini-CEX), 2) the structured oral examination, 3) setting standards, and 4) the assessment of professionalism. Ara Tekian, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Medical Education and Director of International Affairs in the Department of Medical Education, University of Illinois at Chicago, and John Norcini, Ph.D., FAIMER President, conducted the workshops.

Approximately 40 JUST medical school faculty members attended the workshops, representing all of the basic and clinical departments as well as the administration. The workshops included large and small group discussions, role playing, and analysis of videotaped examinations. Throughout the small group sessions, participants were given the opportunity to apply their newly acquired concepts in their own environment and reflect on their applicability and usefulness.

During the two days, the participants were encouraged to ask questions about these or other relevant assessment topics in both the undergraduate and postgraduate arenas. Participants were also given an opportunity at the end of the workshop to reflect and develop an action plan for both the short and the long term.

Improvements in the assessment system at JUST might have a positive influence well beyond the medical school. JUST is one of the leading institutions in Jordan and advances are likely to be noted by others in the region.

As a side benefit of the workshop, the faculty met with the Jordanian Medical Council and presented information on assessment in the postgraduate setting.

FAME Course to be Held at AMEE Meeting

Fundamentals of Assessment in Medical Education (FAME), a basic-level course on educational assessment, will be introduced at the next Association for Medical Education in Europe (AMEE) meeting August 25-29, 2007 in Trondheim, Norway. FAME targets individuals who are members of medical faculties and who are likely to be relatively new to teaching and assessment. Persons who have assumed new responsibilities for assessment are also likely to benefit from the course. FAME is designed around two complementary dimensions, five assessment themes (Test Design; Test Material Development; Standard Setting; and Scoring, Analysis, and Reporting) and four assessment frames (Assessment of Knowledge and Reasoning, Assessment of Clinical Skills, Assessment of Workplace Performance, and Assessment of Programs).

The course schedule will include one and one-half pre-conference days consisting of plenary and small group sessions. Small group work will be organized around the four frames listed above, culminating with faculty facilitators preparing a conference itinerary for the participants in each of the frames. During the AMEE conference, faculty and participants will meet daily over lunch to review sessions attended. At the conclusion of the AMEE conference, faculty will sum up the course experience, address remaining questions from participants, and discuss possible future study.

FAIMER President Delivers Plenary at 2006 Medical Education Conference

FAIMER President, John J. Norcini, Ph.D., was Keynote Speaker at a Plenary Session entitled Future of Assessment Across the Education Continuum at the 2006 Medical Education Conference, held April 29 – May 3 in London, Ontario, Canada. Dr. Norcini presented an overview of assessment in medical education at this year’s conference, which was themed Partnerships for Improving Health Care.
