Duration of studies
There is a compulsory training of 1.5 years (Artz im Practikum).
- General Practice: 3 years
- Specialist Training: 4-6 years
Trainee selection process
Access to general training is open. There is no specified number of available specialist positions. A physician who wants to specialize in a particular area is expected to work in that area for a certain period of time.
Specialty curriculum authority
The specialty curriculum authorities are the Ländesärtzekammern, which are the medical associations in each German state (Land).
Teaching takes place mostly in German hospitals, but also in private practice, research institutes, centers for occupational health, etc. Trainees are supervised by a qualified physician who is certified to practice in the specialty.
