James A. Hallock, M.D.

James A. Hallock, M.D.Dr. Hallock is President and Chief Executive Officer of the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG®). Prior to joining ECFMG on February 1, 2001, Dr. Hallock served as the Dean of East Carolina University Brody School of Medicine since 1988 and as Vice Chancellor for Health Sciences since 1990.

Born in Paterson, New Jersey, he attended public schools there. He received his bachelor degree from Seton Hall University in South Orange, New Jersey in 1963 and his medical degree from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. in 1967. Dr. Hallock completed his medical training at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. Following his pediatric training, Dr. Hallock spent two years at Keesler Airforce Base in Biloxi, Mississippi. He then accepted a position in 1972 as Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at the University of South Florida where he moved through the ranks to become Executive Dean of South Florida College of Medicine in 1985.

He has held a wide variety of academic and administrative positions in medicine, including Associate Dean of All Children’s Hospital at the University of South Florida School of Medicine, Executive Dean and Professor of Pediatrics at the University of South Florida School of Medicine, and tenured Professor of Pediatrics at East Carolina University Brody School of Medicine, and is currently a Clinical Associate in Pediatrics at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. Dr. Hallock has published extensively, having submitted 32 articles to juried medical and medical education journals and texts.

Dr. Hallock is a Fellow of the Academy of Pediatrics, and a member of the USMLE Composite Committee and the USMLE Committee on Score Validity. In March 2001, he was reappointed as a Member-at-Large of the National Board of Medical Examiners, having previously served in that capacity from 1994-2000 and as a member of the Executive Committee from 1999-2000. Dr. Hallock also serves as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Foundation for Advancement of Medical Education and Research (FAIMER) and is a member of the Advisory Committee of the International Institute for Medical Education (IIME) and the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME) Task Force for Defining International Standards in Postgraduate Medical Education.

Dr. Hallock also served as a member of the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) and as an Accreditation Site Visitor. He has concluded a nine-year term as a member of the Council of Deans Administrative Board and Executive Council of the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) (1991-2000) and served as Chair of the Council of Deans for the AAMC for 1998-99. Dr. Hallock is past Chair of the Joint Conference Committee on Medical Care, Board of Directors, North Carolina Institute of Medicine.

Dr. Hallock received the Jacobi Award for Senior Pediatrics from Georgetown University Medical School and was recognized as Outstanding Clinical Professor of 1976 at the University of South Florida School of Medicine.

He and his wife, Jeanne, have three married children and nine grandchildren.
