James A. Hallock, M.D.

James A. Hallock, M.D.Dr. Hallock is President Emeritus of the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG®) and former Chair of FAIMER’s Board of Directors. He currently serves as a FAIMER Senior Scholar.

Born in Paterson, New Jersey, he received his bachelor’s degree from Seton Hall University in South Orange, New Jersey, and his medical degree from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. Dr. Hallock completed his training in Pediatrics at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. Following his training, he spent two years at Keesler Airforce Base in Biloxi, Mississippi. He then accepted a position as Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at the University of South Florida, where he moved through the ranks to become Executive Dean of the University of South Florida College of Medicine.

Dr. Hallock has held a variety of other academic and administrative positions in medicine, including Associate Dean of All Children’s Hospital at the University of South Florida School of Medicine, Professor of Pediatrics at East Carolina University Brody School of Medicine, and Clinical Associate in Pediatrics at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. Prior to joining ECFMG and FAIMER, Dr. Hallock held the positions of Dean of East Carolina University Brody School of Medicine and Vice Chancellor for Health Sciences at East Carolina University. Dr. Hallock has had more than 40 articles and book chapters published in juried medical and medical education journals and textbooks.

Dr. Hallock has served as a Member-at-Large of the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME) and as a member of the NBME’s Executive Board; a member of the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) Composite Committee and as Chair of the USMLE Committee on Score Validity; a member of the Advisory Committee of the International Institute for Medical Education (IIME); a member of the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME) Task Force for Defining International Standards in Postgraduate Medical Education and as a member of WFME’s Executive Council; a member of the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) and as an Accreditation Site Visitor; a member of the Council of Deans Administrative Board and Executive Council of the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) and as Chair of the Council of Deans for AAMC; and as a member and Chair of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education.

Dr. Hallock is a Fellow of the Academy of Pediatrics. He received the Jacobi Award for Senior Pediatrics from Georgetown University Medical School and was recognized as Outstanding Clinical Professor of 1976 at the University of South Florida School of Medicine. He received the AAMC’s Distinguished Service Member Award in 2001. In 2009, Dr. Hallock was awarded an honory doctoral degree by Georgetown University. Also in 2009, he was the recipient of the NBME’s Edithe J. Levit Distinguished Service Award, the NBME’s Special Recognition Award, the Association for Hospital Medical Education’s John C. Leonard Award in Medical Education, and an Association for Medical Education in Europe (AMEE) Lifetime Achievement Award. He and his wife, Jeanne, have three married children and nine grandchildren.
