Eliana Amaral, M.D., Ph.D.
I am an M.D., Ph.D, Ob.&Gyn. specialist, working as university professor at UNICAMP (Sao Paulo, Brazil) since 1987. My current positions are: Director of the Obstetrics Unit at our hospital; Coordinator for the Teaching Board for Undergraduate Students at my department; and Member of the Curriculum Reform Board at the School of Medical Sciences/UNICAMP.
My interest in public health and programmatic aspects of HIV/STI/Infections in women has mostly driven my research activities. Due to my expertise, I have been participating in international meetings related to these topics, and helped developing national guidelines. Since my post-doctoral training in Reproductive and Sexual Health in London, UK, finished in September 2002, I was introduced to qualitative research and started to develop projects in maternal, perinatal, and reproductive health more focused on quality of care and health providers’ attitudes and behaviors.
I have been deeply involved in teaching for undergraduate (since 1987) and graduate (since 1994) students, coordinating teaching units, and participating in Teaching Boards. Since September 2002, I have helped to design and implement the new curriculum at our Medical School, including two teaching modules, which integrate Internal Medicine, Pediatrics and Ob&Gyn: Semiology & Propedeutics (Y3) and Integral Assistance to Health (Y4). In particular, the last module poses a special challenge on changing the scenario for teaching and practicing basic clinical skills in primary health centers working with Family Medicine teams.
