Congratulations to Abdel-Karim Koumaré (PHIL 2009), who was the head facilitator of a workshop entitled “Assessment of Lectures by Students” at the 18th Meeting of French Speaking Deans and Faculty in Health Sciences Education, held April 16-19, 2011, in Libreville, Gabon. In French-speaking regions of Africa, it is uncommon to have students provide feedback to faculty on lectures, which are used as the predominant method for teaching. Using case studies, the workshop showed 40 educators how they can involve students in assessing faculty teaching skills.

Congratulations to Narasimman Swaminathan (PSG 2010), who was recently nominated to serve on a subcommittee to develop a module on respiratory management as part of a larger e-learning tool on Comprehensive Management of Spinal Cord Injury (SCI). In addition to respiratory management, this new software tool is expected to assist health professionals involved in SCI in such areas as prevention of SCI, clinical assessment of patients with SCI, pre-hospital and acute care, psychosocial management of SCI patients and their families, and vocational rehabilitation, among others. Development of the e-learning tool is a cooperative effort involving the International Spinal Cord Society (ISCoS), the Asian Spinal Cord Network (ASCoN), Livability Ireland, the Indian Spinal Injuries Centre (ISIC), and the University of Sydney.

Venugopalarao Tanneru (CMCL 2007) recently coordinated a statewide convention on emergency care and training at NRI Medical College and Hospital in Chinakakani, India. This one-day program was an extension of Dr. Tanneru’s education innovation project. The program, organized by Dr. NTR University of Health Sciences and Andhra Pradesh Medical Graduates USA, was held on January 9, 2011, and included workshops on Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), and Neonatal Advanced Life Support (NALS). A guest lecture on Global Advances and the Future of Resuscitation Science was given by Vemuri S. Murthy, M.D., Chair, Department of Anesthesiology, West Suburban Medical Center, Oak Park, Illinois. Dr. Dharmapuri Vidyasagar, Emeritus Professor, Department of Pediatrics, Division of Neonatology, University of Illinois, organized PALS and NALS with simulators. Mr. Bobby Wales from the American Heart Association (AHA) delivered a key note address.

Himanshu Pandya Appointed Convenor of MCI Regional Center at Pramukhswami Medical College

Himanshu Pandya (CMCL 2007) has been appointed Convenor of the Medical Council of India (MCI) Regional Center at Pramukhswami Medical College, Karamsad, Gujarat. Pramukhswami Medical College is one of 13 schools selected as regional centers by MCI to promote faculty development at medical colleges throughout India. The regional centers conduct orientation programs for coordinators of medical education units as well as basic course workshops for junior and mid-level faculty. The centers also train faculty members at associated medical colleges with enough capacity to conduct additional basic course workshops.

The Regional Center at Pramukhswami Medical College was launched on December 10, 2010, and since then has trained 86 educators at the regional center itself and 164 educators at associated colleges in its basic course on medical education technologies. Workshops conducted at the center are directed by Dr. Pandya, and sessions are led by trained faculty, including FAIMER Fellows Praveen Singh (CMCL 2008), Suman Singh (CMCL 2008), Uday Singh (GSMC 2008), and Sushil Singh (GSMC 2010).

Dr. Pandya was recently appointed by MCI’s Board of Governors to serve on the Committee to Revise Undergraduate Curriculum in Medicine and the Subcommittee for Curriculum Implementation Support Program. He was awarded Fellowship of the Indian College of Physicians in January 2011.

In this new role, Eliana will be facilitator/manager of Brazil Ministry of Education projects involving university-wide endeavors, including national evaluation of undergraduate programs (Sistema Nacional de Avaliação da Educação Superior [SINAES] / Exame Nacional de Desempenho dos Estudantes [ENADE]), fellowships for students to perform research based on community needs (Programa de Educação Tutorial [PET]), and the new foreign medical graduates examination (Revalidação de Diplomas Médicos Obtidos no Exterior [REVALIDA]). She will continue to be responsible for the coordination of the Committee on Valuing Teaching on Academic Careers at the Health Sciences School and the Brazilian Ministry of Education Pro-Ensino Project at UNICAMP. Eliana also heads Brazil’s National Specialty Board on Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Congratulations to Elsie Kiguli-Malwadde (PHIL 2005), who recently joined the African Centre for Global Health and Social Transformation (ACHEST) as the Director of the African Coordinating Centre (ACC) for the Medical Education Partnership Initiative (MEPI). In her new role, Dr. Kiguli-Malwadde, formerly Associate Professor of Radiology at Makerere University, will be devoting her professional efforts full time to improving health professions education and research in sub-Saharan Africa.

Through MEPI, the United States government has supported the creation of a network of 30 regional partners in Africa, and has awarded grants to 13 African medical institutions in 12 countries. The purpose of the grants is to transform medical education by improving the “quality, numbers, and retention of graduates” in the health professions, and to strengthen research and innovation in medical education. The role of the ACC is to support the achievement of MEPI goals for a five-year term by serving as a central source of expertise for grantees, and by providing technical assistance and communication services, as well as promoting accreditation and certification in the region. In addition to appointing Dr. Kiguli-Malwadde as Director to help fulfill its mission, the ACC has formed a team of advisors, consisting of experts in African health professions education, including Jehu Iputo (FFFP 1991), E. Oluwabunmi Olapade-Olaopa (PHIL 2002), and Abdel-Karim Koumaré (PHIL 2009).

Congratulations to Chinmay Shah (GSMC 2008) on successfully organizing a three-day workshop on medical education technology at Government Medical College, Bhavnagar in India. Also participating in the workshop were Himanshu Pandya (CMCL 2007), who served as an observer for the Medical Council of India, and Priti Kapadia-Gupta (GSMC 2010), who was a guest speaker.

Dr. Shah was himself a guest lecturer at Gujarat Medical Education and Research Society (GMERS) Medical College, Gotri in Vadodara, India. His lecture was on preparing multiple-choice questions (MCQ) and item analysis.

Dr. Shah has also successfully organized a one-day workshop entitled “Advance Good Clinical Practice.” He has worked as an Advisor in continuing medical education (CME) on emergency medicine.

Dr. Shah also recently received third prize at the 6th Annual Conference of the Anatomical Society of India, Gujarat Chapter, for the presentation of his paper, “Item Analysis of Presently Available MCQ Books.” He also recently published the following articles:

Congratulations to Angelika Reinbrech-Schutte (SAFRI 2010) and Marietjie van Rooyen (PHIL 2006), who were recently recognized with Educational Innovation Awards by the University of Pretoria. Drs. Reinbrech-Schutte and van Rooyen were recognized, along with two other members of the Department of Family Medicine, for their work in developing and managing the Longitudinal Clinic Attachment Scheme, which involves nearly 1,000 students spending a day at regular intervals throughout their training at specific community clinics.

Congratulations to Rita Sood (PHIL 2005), who recently received her Master of Medical Education degree with distinction from the University of Dundee in Scotland. Dr. Sood also conducted a pre-conference workshop on clinical bedside teaching and participated in a session on the application of competence-based medical education in South East Asia at the 1st International Meeting of the South East Asia Regional Association of the World Federation for Medical Education (SEARAME), held in Jakarta, Indonesia, in November 2010. She was also elected President of SEARAME (2012-2015) at the November meeting of SEARAME’s Executive Committee. This year, Dr. Sood also received Fellowships of the Royal College of Physicians (FRCP) of London and the National Academy of Medical Sciences (FAMS) of India.

Sucheta Dandekar (PHIL 2010) organized the 37th National Conference of the Association of Clinical Biochemists of India in Mumbai, December 11-15, 2010. Included in the conference was a panel discussion on “The Best Practices in Biochemistry Medical Education and What Needs to Be Changed,” moderated by Suresh Chari (GSMC 2009). GSMC-FAIMER Regional Institute Director Avinash Supe (PHIL 2002, IFME 2007), Rohini Bhadre (GSMC 2009), and Dr. Dandekar were the panelists. Dr. F. R. Billimoria, former Professor and Head, Sion Hospital, Mumbai, and Dr. Jogenananda Pramanik, Head of Biochemistry and Director of International Relations, Allianze College of Medical Sciences in Kepala Batas, Penang, Malaysia, chaired the session.

The panelists deliberated on the need to decrease number of “wet” practicals in biochemistry laboratory training and emphasize the interpretation of laboratory results. They concluded that horizontal integration and vertical integration is necessary, and that case-based/problem-based learning should also be included. Seminars by the students can be included in the curriculum to encourage self-learning. Methods for implementing the proposed curriculum put forward by the Medical Council of India were also discussed.

Eskinder Weldetensaye (PHIL 2008) is currently in Sierra Leone on a mission to work and teach at a university hospital during his sabbatical leave from Addis Ababa University. One of his tasks while there will be to start a postgraduate program in obstetrics and gynecology. He is currently preparing curricula for both a Master's program in obstetrics and gynecology and a fellowship in obstetrics and gynecology.
