Module 6: Research Design

Module 6 is made up of the following eight 10-hour units:

  • 6.1. Mixed Methods Research and Evaluation
  • 6.2. Literature Review and Writing a Research Question
  • 6.3. Research Designs and Sampling
  • 6.4. Quantitative Research Methods
  • 6.5. Quantitative Data Analysis
  • 6.6. Qualitative Research Methods
  • 6.7. Qualitative Data Analysis
  • 6.8. Research Governance

Students will be assessed based on their completion of four formative Tutor-Marked Assignments (TMAs), participation in four required unit discussion forum activities, and one integrated module assessment.

Learning outcomes for Module 6 are:

  • To understand the theoretical and philosophical basis of research design
  • To be able to design mixed methods research
  • To understand the difference between research and evaluation
  • To be able to undertake a literature review and write a research question
  • To consider a variety of research designs and approaches to sampling
  • To be able to design and critically discuss quantitative research methods
  • To develop skills in quantitative data analysis
  • To be able to design and critically discuss qualitative research methods
  • To develop skills in qualitative data analysis
  • To appreciate the principles and methods of research governance

Students are expected to do all of the above with a critical and reflective approach based on an appreciation of evidence and cultural context.
