The Modules

Module 1: Assessment

Module 1 is made up of the following eight 15-hour units:

  • 1.1. Foundations of Assessment
  • 1.2. Blueprinting
  • 1.3. Objective Structured Clinical Exams (OSCEs)
  • 1.4. Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs)
  • 1.5. Essays and Short Answer Questions
  • 1.6. Clinical and Oral Examinations
  • 1.7. Workplace-based Assessments
  • 1.8. Standard Setting

Students will be assessed based on their completion of four formative Tutor-Marked Assignments (TMAs), participation in four required unit discussion forum activities, and one integrated module assessment.

Learning outcomes for Module 1 are:

  • To provide a robust grounding in the principles and processes of assessment
  • To ensure understanding of the fundamental concepts of validity, reliability, and generalizability of assessment results
  • To master the assessment design processes of blueprinting and standard setting and to understand the relationship of these to curriculum outcome statements
  • To be able to develop Objective Structured Examinations, multiple choice questions, essays and short answer questions, clinical and oral examinations, and workplace based assessments
  • To offer critical appraisal of these concepts and methods
  • To consider these processes and principles in relation to the student’s own context

Students are expected to do all of the above with a critical and reflective approach.
