Creating Educational Opportunities for Medical Educators
International Fellowship in Medical Education
The coming year will be one of transition for the International Fellowship in Medical Education (IFME) program. Since it was established, the IFME program has employed an individual mentorship model. Participants in the program have partnered with mentors at U.S. host institutions to pursue educational programs developed by the Fellow and supported by the Fellow's home country institution. Beginning in 2005, the IFME program will provide support for Institute alumni to pursue master's degrees in medical education at institutions worldwide. See FAIMER's Fellowship Programs — A New Educational Pathway.
For the 2004 IFME program year, the last year for IFME's current individual mentorship model, FAIMER received 118 applications from applicants in 42 countries. Of these, 55 were deemed eligible for review by the FAIMER Fellowships Selection Advisory Committee. Awards were offered to and accepted by 11 applicants.
In keeping with IFME's current model, these Fellows will pursue educational programs, from six months to one year in length, that are tailored to their specific home country needs and that have the potential to improve and expand educational programs at their home country institutions and departments. Refer to Exhibit A for the 2004 IFME Fellows and their educational programs.
