Partners

To maximize its impact on world health, FAIMER actively seeks collaborations that create and enhance resources for international medical educators. These partnerships have resulted in new opportunities for those who teach and evaluate physicians.

The Network: Towards Unity for Health

FAIMER is a member of The Network: Towards Unity for Health, a global association of institutions for education of health professionals committed to contribute, through education, research, and service, to the improvement and sustainability of health in the communities they serve. The Network's member institutions seek collaboration with their health systems and explore innovative educational approaches, such as community-based education and problem-based learning. The Network emphasizes educational research, research on priority health needs, and on the efficacy of health services, and has expressed interest in reviewing and publishing the work of FAIMER Fellows produced during and after their fellowships. The Network is a non-governmental organization in official relationship with the World Health Organization.

National Board of Medical Examiners®

The Evaluation Fellowship Program is an educational initiative of the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME®) designed to allow international medical school faculty, or staff members of official agencies involved in the evaluation of physicians in their home countries, to study aspects of NBME's operations. Under the program, Fellows spend between three and six months in residence at NBME in Philadelphia, participating in the day-to-day operations of NBME organizational units involved with test administration, medical school services, psychometrics and scoring, test design and development, test construction, and information technology. The goal of the program is to enable Fellows to serve as resident experts in such topics at their home country institutions.

Beginning in 2003, FAIMER and NBME collaborated to further develop the educational opportunities available through NBME's Evaluation Fellowship Program. Under the collaboration, NBME will host two staff members of the National Medical Examination Centre in Beijing, People's Republic of China. FAIMER will provide funding and visa sponsorship for the Fellows, who will devote several months to studying aspects of medical licensing examinations. In 2003, the fellowships were awarded to Dr. Ju He and Dr. Meiqing Zhang, and, in 2004, FAIMER worked to secure the visas that will allow them to participate in the fellowships, which are expected to begin in 2005.

Creating Educational Opportunities for Medical Educators

Effective medical education is central to the task of meeting the health care needs of communities. The goal of FAIMER's Faculty Development Center is to create and enhance educational opportunities for those who teach physicians committed to improving and maintaining the health of the communities they serve. These educational opportunities provide the skills and knowledge necessary to enhance and expand medical education, with the goal of improving health outcomes.

FAIMER's programs for medical educators focus primarily on serving educators and institutions in South Asia, with sub-Saharan Africa and South America as additional areas of concentration. These geographical foci concentrate local networks of medical educators, facilitating communication and collaboration. They also establish local working models for enhancing medical education in these areas. The availability and proximity of such resources provide self-sustaining support for improving medical education and local health care.
