Educating the Educators
International Fellowships in Medical Education
The International Fellowships in Medical Education (IFME) allow faculty from schools of medicine abroad to access educational opportunities in the United States that are tailored toward specific, home country needs. Fellows study aspects of medical education that have the potential to improve and expand educational programs at their home country institutions and departments. The program strives to:
- Assist international medical schools in improving and advancing the process of medical education.
- Facilitate placement of medical education leaders from abroad at U.S. host institutions able to provide excellent instructional experiences in areas of recognized home country need.
- Advance the international exchange of information in the medical sciences and in medical education.
- Contribute to the promotion of international understanding and exchange among nations.
Up to twenty fellowships are awarded annually. Programs range in length from six months to one year. Eligible areas of study include: educational methodology, curriculum design, and evaluation systems. This study may be conducted in departments of medical education or traditional disciplines of clinical or basic sciences, and mentoring is provided by preceptors in these disciplines. Although the major emphasis of this program is to learn educational processes, Fellows may concurrently pursue some collaborative research interest with U.S. basic science or clinical faculty.
During the 2002-2003 IFME program year, FAIMER received sixty-one applications from applicants in twenty-seven countries. Of these, thirty-nine were deemed eligible for review by the IFME Scientific Review Panel. Awards were offered to and accepted by five applicants. Refer to Exhibit A for information on the 2002-2003 IFME Fellows and their educational programs.
