International Fellowships in Medical Education

The International Fellowships in Medical Education (IFME) program allows faculty from schools of medicine abroad to gain access to educational opportunities in the United States that are tailored toward specific home country needs. Fellows study aspects of medical education that have the potential to improve and expand educational programs at their home country institutions and departments. The program strives to:

  • Assist international medical schools in improving and advancing the process of medical education.
  • Facilitate placement of medical education leaders from abroad at U.S. host institutions able to provide excellent instructional experiences in areas of recognized home country need.
  • Advance the international exchange of information in the medical sciences and in medical education.
  • Contribute to the promotion of international understanding and exchange among nations.

Approximately twenty fellowships are awarded annually. Programs range in length from six months to one year. Eligible areas of study include: educational methodology, curriculum design, and evaluation systems. This study may be conducted in departments of medical education or traditional disciplines of clinical or basic sciences, and mentoring is provided by preceptors in these disciplines. Although the major emphasis of this program is to learn educational processes, Fellows may concurrently pursue some collaborative research interest with U.S. basic science or clinical faculty.

For the 2001-2002 IFME program year, FAIMER received 118 applications from applicants in forty-five countries. Of these, fifty-nine were deemed eligible for review by the IFME Scientific Review Panel. Awards were offered to and accepted by twenty applicants. Refer to Exhibit A for information on the 2001-2002 IFME Fellows and their educational programs.

IFME Fellows Attend the 113th Annual Meeting of the Association of American Medical Colleges

Twelve Fellows attended the 113th Annual Meeting of the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) that was held in San Francisco, California, from November 8 through 13, 2002. On November 10, Fellows had an opportunity to meet staff and other Fellows at the FAIMER breakfast meeting. A luncheon hosted by James A. Hallock, M.D., Chair, FAIMER Board of Directors, and ECFMG President, and John J. Norcini, Ph.D., FAIMER President, was held in the Fellows' honor on November 11.

The Fellows attended lectures and workshops appropriate to their disciplines, and had the opportunity to learn about a wide variety of issues affecting medical education in the United States. The Fellows enjoyed the AAMC Leadership Forum. Also popular was the ECFMG/FAIMER Update, presented on November 12 by Dr. Hallock, Dr. Norcini, Stephen S. Seeling, ECFMG Vice President for Operations, and Gerald P. Whelan, M.D., ECFMG Vice President for the Clinical Skills Assessment Program.
