2014 Annual International Conference of The Network: Towards Unity for Health

The 2014 annual international conference of The Network: Towards Unity for Health (TUFH) took place November 19-23, 2014, in Fortaleza, Brazil. The conference theme was “Strengthening Health Professions Education as a Policy to Improve Health,” and its program included keynote addresses, didactic sessions, workshops, and poster sessions built around this theme, as well as site visits to local community health care facilities.

A highlight of the 2014 Network: TUFH conference was the session presenting winners of the second annual Projects That Work competition, sponsored and organized by FAIMER, which showcased seven projects that have been successfully addressing missions related to the conference theme for three years or longer. An annual feature of The Network: TUFH conference, Projects That Work recognizes excellent projects that have succeeded beyond initial implementation and have had a significant impact on health, the community, or the school, in order to encourage the development, implementation, and dissemination of more such projects. An open worldwide call resulted in 64 submissions, from which seven were selected by an international panel of 13 reviewers.

The 2014 Projects That Work winning projects were represented at the conference by (pictured above, left to right) Hoffie Conradie (South Africa), Patricia Kelly (South Africa), Gavin MacGregor (South Africa), Suhasini Jayantilal Nagda (India), Damas Dukundane (Rwanda), Michèle Twomey (South Africa), and Jenny Paola Salamanca Preciado (Colombia). The panel discussion was moderated by FAIMER Vice President for Education Bill Burdick.

Projects That Work will also be a feature of the next Network: TUFH conference to be held in Pretoria, South Africa, September 12-16, 2015. Check back in January for an announcement of the opening of the 2015 competition application.

John Norcini Is Awarded an Honorary Fellowship of the Academy of Medical Educators

FAIMER President and CEO John Norcini, Ph.D., was recently awarded an Honorary Fellowship of the Academy of Medical Educators (AoME) during an Awards Ceremony at the Annual Academic Meeting of the AoME on October 22, 2014, at The Royal College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists in the United Kingdom. Honorary Fellowship is the highest award of the AoME and is bestowed upon individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to both medical education and to the Academy.

2015 Travelling Fellowship for Medical Education

The Association for the Study of Medical Education (ASME) and Wiley-Blackwell have identified funding of up to £2,000 for Medical Education to support a 2015 Travelling Fellowship. The aim of the Fellowship is to provide financial support to an individual or a research group to facilitate gaining further experience/training/knowledge that will enable strengthening of health professional education research efforts. The individual or team must demonstrate commitment to a particular project and clearly indicate how the activities supported by the Travelling Fellowship will enhance the capacity to engage in conceptually grounded, methodologically rigorous, and programmatic research efforts. Among other things, the Fellowship may be used to enable visiting an institution or research group in furtherance of the individual’s own professional and personal development and collaborative opportunities or to bring a scholar to the team in furtherance of the group’s and research project’s development.

To apply for a Medical Education Travelling Fellowship, applicants are asked to submit a proposal outlining the purpose for which they would use the Fellowship. The submission should be written in English and must not exceed 1,000 words in length. One entry per applicant is permitted.

The proposal should be accompanied by:

Launch of the Manipal University-FAIMER International Institute for Leadership in Interprofessional Education

FAIMER and Manipal University are pleased to announce the launch of the Manipal University-FAIMER International Institute for Leadership in Interprofessional Education (MUFIILIPE). MUFIILIPE is a two-year fellowship program that emphasizes development of leadership competencies for interprofessional practice (IPP). It provides opportunities for interaction with recognized leaders in IPP, collaboration with peers, and implementation of interprofessional projects. The fellowship includes two annual one-week residential sessions at Manipal University (MU) in Karnataka, India, and two 11-month online learning sessions following the residential sessions. Participants receive mentoring and support from experts, faculty, and fellows who will be connected throughout the program and beyond.

Representatives of MU and FAIMER gathered in Manipal on September 22, 2014, where Memoranda of Understanding were exchanged by FAIMER Associate Director for Regional Institutes Ralf Graves and MU Vice Chancellor Dr. K. Ramnarayan to mark the official launch of MUFIILIPE. Also in attendance were MU Pro Vice Chancellors Dr. Vinod Bhat and Dr. Surendra Shetty, MUFIILIPE Director Dr. Ciraj Ali Mohammed, and other local dignitaries.

MUFIILIPE will welcome its first class of fellows in May 2015. The program is open to all professions interested in contributing to the health of communities. Twenty fellows will be accepted each year. Applications for 2015 will be accepted through January 15, 2015.

Rashmi Vyas Joins FAIMER Staff as Cross Cultural Educationalist

We are pleased to announce that FAIMER Fellow and faculty member Rashmi Vyas, M.B.B.S., M.D., M.H.P.E., has joined our staff in Philadelphia, as Cross Cultural Educationalist. Dr. Vyas is a 2003 FAIMER Institute Fellow. She serves on the faculty of the FAIMER Institute in Philadelphia, as well as the CMCL FAIMER, GSMC-FAIMER, and PSG-FAIMER Regional Institutes in India. She is also a 2005 International Fellowship in Medical Education (IFME) Fellow, and earned her Master’s Degree in Health Professions Education from the University of Illinois at Chicago in 2010.

Prior to joining FAIMER, Dr. Vyas worked as a Professor in the Department of Physiology at Christian Medical College (CMC), Vellore, India. Her main interests are in curriculum innovations, faculty development, program evaluation, and qualitative research. She was course organizer for the Post Graduate Diploma in Family Medicine for recent M.B.B.S. graduates, run by CMC Vellore. She also served as Convener for the Medical Council of India Regional Centre for National Faculty Development as well as the MCI Nodal Centre for advanced courses in medical education at CMC Vellore. Dr. Vyas has contributed as an expert in the curriculum development of basic and advanced courses in medical education at the Medical Council of India. She serves as a reviewer for many journals in health professions education.

In her role as Cross Cultural Educationalist, Dr. Vyas looks forward to working in the area of International Health Professions Education, with a focus on the cross cultural context. She will be involved in FAIMER’s existing education programs, including the FAIMER Institute and Regional Institutes; and will also be involved in the strategic planning of future FAIMER educational activities, educational projects and research, and the development of global programs. Through these efforts, Dr. Vyas hopes to contribute to FAIMER’s mission of improving the health of communities by improving health professions education.

FAIMER-Authored Article Is Subject of Recent Key Literature in Medical Education (KeyLIME) Podcast

An article authored by FAIMER President John Norcini and several other FAIMER staff members was the subject of a recent Key Literature in Medical Education (KeyLIME) podcast by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. The article, titled “The Relationship Between Licensing Examination Performance and the Outcomes of Care by International Medical School Graduates,” appeared in the August 2014 issue of Academic Medicine. The 20-minute podcast can be accessed on the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada website.

FAIMER Announces the 2014 Projects That Work Competition Winners

FAIMER is pleased to announce the selection of seven winners of its second annual Projects That Work competition. A representative of each project will be sponsored by FAIMER to attend the 2014 annual meeting of The Network: Towards Unity for Health (TUFH), to be held November 19-23 in Fortaleza, Brazil. Winners will discuss their work in a panel session of The Network: TUFH meeting to give conference attendees insights about factors that have contributed to these projects’ success and sustainability. An open worldwide call resulted in 64 submissions from which seven were selected by an international panel of 13 reviewers. The Projects That Work competition is an ongoing feature of The Network: TUFH annual meeting.

Many education innovation projects in health professions institutions are implemented, but only some result in significant, sustained change. Projects That Work are projects that have survived beyond initial implementation and have had a significant positive impact on health, the community, or the school over three or more years.

ECFMG Employee’s Interaction with FAIMER Faculty Member While Studying in South Africa Results in Publication

ECFMG employee Ryan Hall recently traveled to Johannesburg, South Africa, as a participant in the Temple University School of Media and Communication 2014 South Africa Study Away Program. Hall was one of 11 Temple students to complete the four-week program, which was set up as an elective course in foreign journalism to mark the 20th anniversary of the end of apartheid. Students spent the first two weeks of the course learning from local experts, who gave presentations and led them on various field trips aimed at enhancing their understanding of South African society. The second half of the course was devoted to individual research projects, and required students to conduct reporting and research in and around Johannesburg.

While in Johannesburg, Hall consulted with FAIMER faculty member and 2004 FAIMER Institute Fellow Francois Cilliers. Dr. Cilliers is an Associate Professor in the Education Development Unit at the University of Cape Town’s Faculty of Health Sciences in Cape Town, South Africa, and is a core faculty member of the Sub-Saharan Africa-FAIMER Regional Institute (SAFRI). Hall’s information-gathering interviews with Dr. Cilliers resulted in a feature that was published in the Philadelphia Daily News on August 17, 2014.

There Is Still Time to Register for IME Day 2014!

There is still time to register for International Medical Education (IME) Day 2014!

“Global Student Exchanges: How Can They Work for Everyone?” is the title of this year’s IME Day, to be held on October 22, 2014, from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm Eastern Time in the United States (UTC – 4). The keynote speaker will be Dr. Jon Dowell from the University of Dundee.

Overview
In this highly interactive face-to-face and virtual workshop, Dr. Dowell will highlight and provoke discussion on issues that surround global student exchanges, also known as international electives. In particular, the conversation will center on ethical issues and evaluation. International electives are often a highlight of students’ education and allow opportunities to travel and witness health care delivery in a different context, often in resource poor countries. However, because they are often self-directed, they present a number of challenges.

The workshop will use participant experiences to consider electives from the student, host and sending institution’s perspective. We will explore the typically diverse range of learning activities and how to evaluate electives holistically from each perspective. Throughout the day, we will identify ethical challenges that emerge and review how these might be managed.

Jon Dowell
Dr. Jon Dowell is a General Practitioner and medical educator in Dundee, Scotland. Over the last 8 years he has been working with colleagues to understand electives better. He initiated the UK Electives Council to share best practices and created a not-for-profit organization to create an alternative ‘Fair Trade’ model of student electives. The first UK conference on medical electives was organized under his leadership.

Jon has volunteered and worked in a number of countries, but does not profess to have the answers or to be an expert in the field. He believes global student exchanges can offer a powerful and formative experience that educators have often left to chance. Along the way risk, ethics, learning and morality appear to have become quite jumbled. He greatly looks forward to discussing these issues with a diverse and international group of scholars.

John Norcini Is Awarded the Karolinska Institutet Prize for Research in Medical Education

FAIMER President and CEO John Norcini, Ph.D., has been selected to receive the 2014 Karolinska Institutet Prize for Research in Medical Education for his important contributions to research in medical education, especially his pioneering research on knowledge decay, specialty certification, and the development of new methods of assessment.

Dr. Norcini will receive the award and a prize amount of €50,000 at a ceremony in Stockholm, Sweden, on October 17.

This international prize is awarded for outstanding research in medical education. The purpose of the prize is to recognize and stimulate high-quality research in the field and to promote long-term improvements of educational practices in medical training. “Medical” includes all education and training for any health science profession. The prize is made possible through financial support from the Gunnar Höglund and Anna-Stina Malmborg Foundation. It is currently awarded every second year.

“Professor Norcini’s research output is consistently of the highest originality and quality, and his empirical work has improved the practice of medical education around the globe. His work has had a widespread, positive impact on the research and practice of medical education and has resulted in many subsequent studies by other researchers. He is one of the key contributors to the entire field of research in medical education,” says Professor Sari Ponzer, Chair of the Prize Committee.

National Conference on Health Professions Education (NCHPE) Registration Open through August 31

The sixth National Conference on Health Professions Education (NCHPE 2014) will be held September 24-27, 2014, at the Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (MGIMS), Sevagram, India. The theme of NCHPE 2014 is “Socially Responsive Health Professions Education: Forging Partnerships between Academic Institutions and the Healthcare Delivery System.” Conference objectives are to: advocate the need to transform health professions education and improve the quality and relevance of health professionals in order to strengthen their impact on health care in India; identify successful models of partnerships between academic institutions and the health care delivery system and share best practices; and develop recommendations to expand the health force and improve the alignment between health care professions and community health needs.

GSMC-FAIMER Regional Institute Celebrates 10-Year Anniversary

In June 2014, the GSMC-FAIMER Regional Institute welcomed its 10th class of Fellows and celebrated this important milestone at Seth G.S. Medical College in Mumbai, India. GSMC-FAIMER, the first of FAIMER’s Regional Institutes to be developed, was launched in 2005. A total of 175 health professions educators from seven countries have participated in the fellowship program, under the direction of Dr. Avinash Supe, Professor and Head of the Department of Surgical Gastroenterology at King Edward Memorial Hospital and a FAIMER Institute 2002 Fellow. Many alumni returned to join current fellows, faculty, and special guests for the 10-year anniversary celebrations.

To commemorate the occasion, GSMC-FAIMER faculty members Sucheta Dandekar (PHIL 2010) and Chinmay Shah (GSMC 2008) produced a book entitled Celebrating 10 Years of Professional Development (PDF - 8 MB). The book includes photos and reflections from faculty and Fellows, and is a testament to the impact the GSMC-FAIMER fellowship program has had. According to Dr. Supe, “The continuous engagement of participants and the impact of the projects on local communities have been tremendous.”

FAIMER Regional Institutes are modeled on the curriculum of the flagship FAIMER Institute fellowship program held each year in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. All of the programs include both residential and distance learning sessions. To date there are six Regional Institutes: three in India, one in Brazil, one in Sub-Saharan Africa, and one in China. 2015 FAIMER Fellowship Application Is Now Open

Applications are currently being accepted for the FAIMER Institute, Brazil-FAIMER Regional Institute, CMCL-FAIMER Regional Institute, GSMC-FAIMER Regional Institute, PSG-FAIMER Regional Institute, and the FAIMER Regional Institute in Latin America and the Caribbean (FRILA). The application for the Sub-Saharan Africa-FAIMER Regional Institute (SAFRI) will open on July 1, 2014, and the application for the CMB-CMU-FAIMER Regional Institute will open on September 1, 2014.

All six Fellows will pursue a Master’s Degree in Health Professions Education: Accreditation and Assessment through the FAIMER-Keele Distance Learning program beginning in September 2014.

Dr. Badyal is a 2011 Fellow of the FAIMER Institute and a 2007 Fellow of the CMCL-FAIMER Regional Institute, as well as current Co-Director of the CMCL-FAIMER Regional Institute. He is Professor and Head, Department of Pharmacology, Christian Medical College, Ludhiana; and Co-Convener of the Medical Council of India Nodal Centre for Faculty Development. Dr. Badyal was recently awarded an M.L. Gupta award by the Association of Physiologists and Pharmacologists of India for the year 2012 for his work in medical education. He is on the editorial board of a number of journals and has delivered a number of lectures on clinical trials, pharmacovigilance, ethics, research methodology, and medical education at national and international conferences and workshops. He senses a great potential and usefulness of the FAIMER-Keele Master's degree program for the mandate of his school and Government regulating agencies, as both are very actively involved in the development of health professionals in India.

Dr. Bedi is a 2007 Fellow of the CMCL-FAIMER Regional Institute. He is a Professor of Pathology at MM Institute of Medical Sciences, Ambala, India, with 18 years of teaching experience. He moderates meu_india@googlegroups.com and many other medical networks. Dr. Bedi is interested in promoting e‑learning and hopes to use his IFME fellowship to leverage the knowledge and networks achieved to make a difference nationally and globally towards improving the health standards in contemporary medical scenarios.

Dr. Borda is a 2008 Fellow of the FAIMER Institute. He is an Associate Professor at the School of Medicine of Javeriana University and also an Ob/Gyn. He is responsible for the Medical Informatics Project, which includes the design of databases, multimedia, virtual patients, and interactive web projects. Dr. Borda believes that the FAIMER-Keele Master’s degree program will allow him to collaborate extensively in the development of the FAIMER Regional Institute in Latin America and the Caribbean (FRILA); the design, implementation, and assessment of a new curriculum; and the development of continuing medical education (CME) courses in health professions education.

Dr. Dandekar is a 2010 Fellow of the FAIMER Institute. She is Professor and Head of Biochemistry at Seth G.S. Medical College and KEM Hospital in Mumbai, India. She is an active faculty member of the PSG FAIMER and GSMC-FAIMER Regional Institutes. Dr. Dandekar says that the nuances of medical education have always intrigued her. She believes that the knowledge gained from the IFME fellowship will help to enhance her role at each and every level of medical education, and that it will also help her to be a good mentor. She looks forward to disseminating the knowledge gained to not only faculty and students at her own institute and university, but also to other aspiring FAIMER Fellows.

Dr. Kalyanasundaram is a 2010 Fellow of the GSMC-FAIMER Regional Institute. She is a Professor of Biochemistry and a senior member of the Medical Education Unit, which is a Medical Council of India Nodal Centre for basic and advanced medical education technology workshops at Christian Medical College, Vellore (CMC Vellore). She is a faculty member of the PSG-FAIMER CMCL-FAIMER Regional Institutes, and the Faculty Advisor for Elective and Exchange students at CMC Vellore. Dr. Kalyanasundaram has also served as a visiting professor at Karolinska University in Stockholm, Sweden through a teacher exchange program. She is on faculty for the Postgraduate Diploma in Family Medicine and Fellowship in HIV medicine, which are two-year distance learning programs offered by CMC Vellore. Her interests are in evaluation of educational programs, curriculum design, distance learning programs, and assessment. She hopes that an IFME fellowship leading to a Master’s in Health Professions Education will enable, support, and empower her in educational research and initiate, motivate, and sustain best practices in medical education at her institution and nationally.

Dr. Shafi is a 2010 Fellow of the FAIMER Institute. She has been involved in medical teaching since 2000. She is a Physiologist by specialty and is currently working as an Associate Professor at Shifa College of Medicine in Islamabad, Pakistan. Dr. Shafi has attended various regional and international conferences and workshops on medical education, and has published articles in scholarly journals. A desire to further improve her knowledge in the field of medical education encouraged her to apply for the IFME fellowship. She explains that Pakistan is a developing country where expertise in the field of medical education is needed, and says that she hopes to improve her knowledge and skills in this field and work toward the implementation of modern trends in medical education in her country.

FAIMER will sponsor a representative of up to five selected projects to attend the 2014 Network: Towards Unity for Health conference in Fortaleza, Brazil, November 19-23, 2014. This year the Projects That Work competition will showcase projects that have been successfully addressing missions related to the 2014 conference theme, “Strengthening Health Professions Education as a Policy to Improve Health,” for three years or longer. Sponsorship includes air travel, hotel accommodation, and conference registration fee.

The intent of the Projects That Work initiative is to recognize excellent projects that have succeeded beyond initial implementation and have had a significant impact on health, the community, or the school, as well as to encourage the development, implementation, and dissemination of more such projects.

FAIMER and WFME Announce the Launch of the World Directory of Medical Schools

FAIMER and the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME) are pleased to announce an important milestone in their collaboration to develop the World Directory of Medical Schools. The World Directory is now available at www.wdoms.org. This new resource, developed in collaboration with the World Health Organization and the University of Copenhagen, is the result of a March 2012 agreement to merge the organizations’ respective directories—FAIMER’s International Medical Education Directory (IMED) and WFME’s Avicenna Directory—to produce a single comprehensive resource on undergraduate medical education worldwide.

The merger of IMED and the Avicenna Directory has combined FAIMER and WFME’s existing data sets and streamlined their data collection efforts. The new World Directory offers enhanced information such as enrollment and curriculum data for schools that offer multiple medical programs or tracks. In the future, additional features, such as information about program recognition or accreditation, will be added to meet the needs of medical regulatory authorities, certifying bodies, and researchers. The availability of current, high-quality information on undergraduate medical education in the form of a centralized resource will advance research on the quality of medical education and efforts to improve medical education, with the ultimate goal of improving public health.

During the transition to the new World Directory of Medical Schools, IMED and the Avicenna Directory will remain open for a year, to ensure that medical regulatory authorities and other users of these directories have continuity of the essential service that they provide. The World Directory, however, will take over as the definitive list of medical schools in the world, and IMED and Avicenna will be discontinued in 2015.

Applications are currently being accepted for 2014 enrollment in the FAIMER-Keele Distance Learning program.

The FAIMER-Keele Distance Learning (DL) program offers health professions educators the opportunity to receive advanced training in all aspects of health professions education. Educators in medicine, nursing, dentistry, and other health professions can acquire the knowledge and skills to advance health professions education at their institutions to the highest international standards.

The DL program is conducted in partnership with Keele University and the Centre for Medical Education in Context (CenMEDIC) in the United Kingdom. Courses are administered by CenMEDIC and follow the strict quality assurance guidelines and policies of Keele. The following programs are offered:

FAIMER Director for Research and Data Resources Danette Waller McKinley Elected Vice President of AERA Division I, Education in the Professions

Danette Waller McKinley, Ph.D., FAIMER’s Director for Research and Data Resources, has been elected Vice President of Division I, Education in the Professions, American Educational Research Association (AERA), effective in April 2015. The 12 divisions of AERA are organized to represent major scholarly or scientific areas within education research that add to the field and the Association as determined by the AERA Council. Division I focuses on the context and conduct of scientific studies that address education in professional practice disciplines, including medicine, pharmacy, dentistry, and nursing. The Division has a long history with AERA, from its beginning as a special interest group for health professions educators in 1971 to its divisional status approval in 1978. Given the emphasis on education and evaluation of education of professionals, the FAIMER Research staff has been involved in the work of the division for some time. Danette has been a longtime, active member of Division I as a paper submitter and reviewer, presenter, workshop organizer, member of the Established Investigator Awards Committee, and co-chair of the Division I Awards Committee. She was a member of the Division’s Planning Committee for the 2012 Annual Meeting, when FAIMER Associate Vice President for Research and Data Resources Jack Boulet was Program Chair. She has organized sessions supporting Division I’s Learning Communities initiative, and her work with the Awards Committee co-chair and the co-chairs of the Mentoring Committee resulted in a plan to showcase work in progress, engaging newer members of the division. Beginning in 2015, at the conclusion of the AERA Annual Meeting, Danette will represent the interests of Division I members as she serves as a member of the AERA Council. Her tenure as Vice President over the next three or more years will serve to increase the visibility, both nationally and internationally, of FAIMER and the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) in the professional community.

FAIMER Fellows Collaborate to Publish New Book on Community Based Education

Community Based Education in Health Professions: Global Perspectives

FAIMER is proud to announce the publication of a new book on community based education (CBE) authored by Wagdy Talaat, M.D., Ph.D., and Zahra Ladhani, Ph.D., both FAIMER faculty members and Fellows of the 2007 FAIMER Institute. Titled Community Based Education in Health Professions: Global Perspectives, the book was published in January 2014 by the World Health Organization: Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean.

To compile experiences of CBE, the authors invited contributions from health professions education institutions in six countries: Bangladesh, Brazil, Egypt, India, Pakistan, and South Africa. The selected institutions were invited to share stories about the implementation of CBE at their schools, to illustrate how different tools and approaches have worked in a variety of local circumstances. By documenting and sharing these varied experiences, the authors hope that their book will help guide and inspire other educators and community workers interested in implementing CBE programs.

The book’s contributors include FAIMER Fellows Valdes Bollela (PHIL 2006) from Brazil, Dina El-Metwally (PHIL 2010) from Egypt, and Ben van Heerden (PHIL 2006) from South Africa. “The publication of this book marks a major collaborative project led by our Fellows,” says Page Morahan, Ph.D., Co-Director of the FAIMER Institute.

2013 Annual International Conference of The Network: Towards Unity for Health

The 2013 annual international conference of The Network: Towards Unity for Health (TUFH) took place November 16-20, 2013, in Ayutthaya, Thailand. The conference theme was “Rural and Community-Based Healthcare: Opportunities and Challenges for the 21st Century,” and its program included keynote addresses, didactic sessions, workshops, and poster sessions built around this theme, as well as a day devoted to visiting community health care facilities.

A highlight of the 2013 Network: TUFH conference was the first annual Projects That Work plenary session, sponsored and organized by FAIMER, which showcased five projects that have been successfully addressing missions related to the conference theme for three years or longer. The intent of the Projects That Work initiative—which will be an annual feature of The Network: TUFH conference—is to recognize excellent projects that have succeeded beyond initial implementation and have had a significant impact on health, the community, or the school, as well as to encourage the development, implementation, and dissemination of more such projects. An open worldwide call resulted in 120 submissions, from which five were selected by an international panel of 13 reviewers.

The 2013 Projects That Work winning projects were represented at the conference by (pictured above, left to right) Marietjie van Rooyen (South Africa), Mark Shephard (Australia), Elizabeth Paterno (Philippines), Marco Sosa (Colombia), and Saurav Das (India). The plenary panel discussion was moderated by FAIMER Associate Vice President for Education Bill Burdick, who also facilitated a preconference workshop titled “Project Management and Theory of Change.” Other Projects That Work conference components included a poster session and a workshop titled “Using SOCKS, an Innovative Tool for Environmental Analysis in Project Planning,” both facilitated by Ralf Rundgren Graves, FAIMER Associate Director, Regional Institutes; and a workshop titled “Publishing and Other Scholarly Forms of Knowledge Dissemination,” facilitated by Bill Burdick and the co-editors of The Network: TUFH’s journal Education for Health, Michael Glasser and Don Pathman.

Medical Education Editorial Internship

Medical Education is an international, peer-reviewed journal with distribution to readers in more than 80 countries. The journal aims to publish material of the highest quality reflecting worldwide or provocative issues and perspectives relevant to health professional education. The contents will be of interest to learners, teachers, and researchers. It aims to have a significant impact on scholarship in health professional education and, ultimately, on the quality of health care by prioritizing papers that offer a fundamental advance in understanding of practically relevant educational issues. The journal welcomes papers on any aspect of health professional education.

As part of its emphasis on capacity building for the field, the journal will offer three editorial internship positions beginning July 1, 2014. Interns will be involved in all aspects of the editorial role, working closely with the Editor-in-Chief and Deputy Editors, reviewing and offering recommendations on submitted works, engaging in conversations about electronic and print-based innovations at the journal, and contributing editorials or commentaries on timely issues. Interns will be selected through a competitive process (outlined below) with some effort made to ensure geographic diversity.

Applicants should anticipate being able to work 1-2 hours per week for the 12-month duration of the internship. They should have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, formal research training, and a strong understanding of the field of health professional education and health professional education research. An allowance of £300 will be made available for any expenses incurred. In addition, registration to the Association for the Study of Medical Education (ASME) Annual Scientific Meeting will be paid in the July following the completion of the internship.

  3. A 250 word statement indicating what skills and experiences the candidate brings to the internship
  4. A 250 word statement indicating what impact the internship can be expected to have on the candidate’s career
  5. A letter of support from the candidate’s employer
